Calling, a short film from the UAE, has been garnering widespread attention and accolades globally. The psychological thriller was filmed in just 12 hours and has received over a dozen awards in six countries, with seven official screenings, including three at the World Film Festival in Cannes. UAE actor and filmmaker Raaj Rao, who drew inspiration from his personal experiences, created Calling to showcase the inner struggles we all face. He aimed to create a narrative that resonates with universal struggles and triumphs, reassuring audiences that they are not alone.

Despite facing tight time constraints and a demanding 26-scene list, Rao used these challenges to enhance the performances of the actors in the film. Utilizing elements like sound, color, and monochromatic themes, Calling delves deep into the character’s subconscious journey. The film stars UAE-based Ukrainian actor Natalia Melnyk, who has received four Best Actress Awards for her role. The plot revolves around Natalia, a fashion designer dealing with fear and self-doubt as she works to complete her masterpiece. Rao’s decision to illustrate his inner struggles through cinema resulted in a deeply personal and cathartic film.

Calling began its international festival journey in mid-April, earning accolades such as Best Director, Best International Short Film, Best Actress, Best Editor & Sound Design, and Best Trailer. The film has been praised for its portrayal of universal mental health challenges, receiving recognition at events like the Sweden Movie Awards and Cannes. As Calling continues its festival circuit, Rao sees it as a testament to the power of storytelling, resonating with audiences worldwide. The film’s success, with three nominations at Cannes and screenings at prestigious festivals, highlights the UAE’s position in the global film scene and showcases its cinematic prowess.
