Péter Magyar, the political challenger of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has joined the centre-right faction of the European Parliament. His party, Respect and Freedom (TISZA), recently became a member of the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest group in the parliament. Magyar, a former member of Orbán’s government, has been vocal about the corruption and propaganda in Hungary, leading to a significant vote share in the European elections.

Despite initially stating that he would not take up his seat in the European Parliament, Magyar changed his mind after a public vote among his supporters. He has pledged to continue challenging Orbán and his Fidesz party, aiming for positions in parliamentary committees to influence EU legislation. Magyar’s entry into the EPP is seen as a blow to Orbán’s party, which has had a strained relationship with the European Parliament due to rule of law violations.

Magyar’s main focus is to restore the rule of law in Hungary and address the issues of corruption and propaganda in the country. He believes that the EU has not fully understood the situation in Hungary and has inadvertently enabled Orbán’s anti-EU campaign. Magyar also highlighted Hungary’s economic struggles, stating that it is one of the poorest and most corrupt member states in Europe, attributing this to the government’s actions.

The EPP has welcomed TISZA into its group, signaling a shift in Hungarian politics and a desire for an alternative political perspective in the country. Despite sharing some conservative views with Orbán, Magyar has taken a firm stance on supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Although TISZA’s entry has caused some tensions within the EPP, the group is looking to expand its membership with other parties from across Europe.

Overall, Magyar’s entry into the European Parliament marks a new chapter in Hungarian politics, with the potential to bring about change and challenge the dominance of Orbán’s Fidesz party. His focus on addressing issues of corruption, propaganda, and the rule of law in Hungary has resonated with voters, leading to a significant vote share in the European elections. As a member of the EPP, Magyar aims to make a difference in shaping EU legislation and advocating for the interests of Hungarian citizens.
