The UAE’s e-cigarette market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 7.28 per cent over the next five years, reaching a revenue of $68.5 million by the end of this year. Despite the increase in popularity of e-cigarettes, also known as vaping, there are concerns about the health risks associated with these devices. Dr. Mohammed Harriss, a consultant pulmonologist, warns that non-smokers exposed to second-hand vape aerosol can absorb nicotine levels similar to those exposed to second-hand cigarette smoke. Vape aerosol contains carcinogens such as lead and formaldehyde, which can increase the risk of developing cancer.

Research has found that vape liquid contains thousands of unknown chemicals and substances, further adding to the potential health risks of vaping. The increasing popularity of e-cigarettes poses a hazard as it could lead to the renormalization of smoking, which is the largest preventable cause of death. Dr. Harriss emphasizes that vaping should not be seen as a safe alternative to smoking and that the same attitude towards smoking should be applied to vaping. The British Medical Journal also highlights that the ultrafine chemicals released by vape liquid can enter the lungs of individuals in close proximity.

To address the growing issue of vaping, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has released a tobacco-free workplace guide for companies. The guide includes educational materials on the impact of smoking and practical instructions for establishing a smoke-free work environment. UAE laws prohibit smoking in closed public places and the use of tobacco in all public places, including governmental institutions and public transport. The guide aims to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and vaping and to promote smoke-free environments.

Recent research by the US federal agency CDC revealed cases of both children and adults being poisoned by vape smoke through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. The convenience and concealability of vaping devices have made them popular among former non-smokers and youth, who perceive vaping as less harmful than smoking. However, the potential health risks associated with vaping, including lung injuries and irreversible lung damage, highlight the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of e-cigarettes.

Dr. Harriss emphasizes the need to maintain a cautious approach towards vaping, as an increasing number of vape users are experiencing adverse health effects. The presence of unknown chemicals in vape liquid and the ease of concealing vaping devices raise concerns about the long-term impact of vaping on public health. By promoting tobacco-free workplaces and enforcing restrictions on smoking in public places, the UAE aims to protect individuals from the harmful effects of tobacco and vaping products.

In conclusion, the growth of the e-cigarette market in the UAE raises concerns about the potential health risks associated with vaping. The availability of fruity flavors and colorful packaging may attract users, but the hidden dangers of vape aerosol and vape liquid chemicals highlight the need for caution. By implementing measures to create tobacco-free environments and raise awareness about the risks of smoking and vaping, the UAE strives to protect public health and prevent the renormalization of smoking. It is essential for individuals to make informed decisions about their use of e-cigarettes and for authorities to enforce regulations to ensure public safety.
