The UAE has pledged $100 million to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan, with 70% of the pledge already allocated to UN agencies and humanitarian organizations. The aid includes a full range of assistance such as food, health services, livelihood support, emergency shelter, and the protection of women. The goal is to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan and the risk of famine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the aid will be allocated to key partners and UN agencies like OCHA, WFP, UNHCR, FAO, and WHO.
Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, highlighted the UAE’s continuous support since the beginning of the crisis in Sudan. The UAE has provided $130 million in humanitarian aid, dispatched relief planes carrying food and medical supplies, supported refugee camps in Chad, and sent aid to Sudanese refugees in South Sudan. Al Hashimy mentioned the UAE’s commitment to providing humanitarian and relief support to the Sudanese people and the importance of addressing humanitarian challenges in the region.
The UAE has built field hospitals in Chad to provide medical services to Sudanese refugees and treat civilians in need. The country also called for an immediate ceasefire and peaceful solutions to the crisis in Sudan. The UAE emphasized the need for joint efforts to end the conflict, enhance security and stability in Sudan, and establish a government led by civilians to meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people. The Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, expressed gratitude to the UAE for its generous support toward Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, also thanked the UAE for its contributions to the humanitarian efforts in Sudan. Grandi highlighted the importance of state contributions in providing lifesaving assistance to vulnerable people in Sudan, while McCain welcomed all pledges towards WFP’s food operations in Sudan. The UAE’s support is crucial in providing aid to those affected by the conflict in Sudan and its neighboring countries.
