As summer vacations approach and the prospect of long-haul flights looms, it is crucial to stay active and engaged to counteract the challenges of air travel, according to doctors in the UAE. The cramped seats, limited legroom, and prolonged periods of sitting can make it tempting to just sleep through the flight. However, staying active can help prevent health issues such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), back and neck pains, shoulder injuries, dehydration, and motion sickness. Dr. Mahesh Cirasanambati, Managing Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Burjeel Holdings, emphasized the importance of staying active while flying.

Healthcare professionals highlighted the benefits of staying active on long flights, including reducing stress, improving blood circulation, relaxing the body, and enhancing mood. Simple exercises can help prevent stiffness and alleviate discomfort during long flights. Dr. Laiba Ashfaq, a Physiotherapist at Aman Lil Afia Clinic, recommended exercises like foot circles, heel lifts, knee bends, and shoulder rolls to keep the body moving and prevent stiffness. Proper hydration is also crucial to reduce the risk of clots and cramps while flying.

Dr. Hina Salam Siddiqui, a Specialist in Family Medicine, advised passengers to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and doing neck stretches to prevent muscle cramps. In addition to staying active and hydrated, it is essential to stay entertained and eat wisely to maintain energy levels during long flights. Siddiqui also recommended shoulder and arm stretches, as well as wearing compression socks to improve circulation and reduce the risk of DVT. By following these tips and staying active during long flights, travelers can make their journey more enjoyable and minimize the potential health risks associated with air travel.
