Germany is gearing up for an unprecedented security operation as it prepares to host the Euro 2024 football tournament, with the largest police deployment since the federal police force was established in 1951. Around 22,000 officers will be on duty daily, with no holidays allowed until mid-July. This massive security effort is in response to the anticipation of hundreds of thousands of fans attending matches across ten different German cities. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has stated that the country has prepared for various potential problems, including the threat of Islamist terrorism, hooliganism, violent criminals, and cyber security.

Recent years have seen a rise in football-related violence across Europe, with concerning incidents in several countries. To address this, a comprehensive security plan has been put in place for Euro 2024. The tournament will take place in cities with excellent rail connections to neighbouring countries, making it easy for international fans to attend. High-risk matches, such as the England vs Serbia tie, have been identified, and measures are being taken to prevent potential violence. Fans will be restricted to drinking low-alcohol beer outside the stadium, with alcohol consumption prohibited in the stands to reduce the risk of confrontations.

In preparation for potential clashes, a large training exercise was conducted in the village of Stützerbach. Hundreds of police officers practiced responding to a simulated scenario involving violent football fans. The drill aimed to prepare officers for the disturbances they might face during the tournament. Memories of past violence at football tournaments, like the attacks on English fans by Russian hooligans during Euro 2016 in France, serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining security measures. High-risk matches involving teams from countries like Poland, Croatia, Romania, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic have raised concerns about potential confrontations.

Germany’s security operation for Euro 2024 will involve both local police forces and support from international police agencies. The country is taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of all attendees and prevent any incidents that could mar the tournament. With a strong police presence planned wherever large crowds gather, authorities are working to prevent any disruptions and maintain order throughout the event. The scale of this security operation highlights the importance of thorough planning and coordination to ensure a safe and successful tournament for all involved.

As Euro 2024 approaches, the focus on security measures is paramount to ensure a smooth and incident-free tournament. Germany’s commitment to mobilizing its largest police deployment in decades underscores the seriousness with which authorities are approaching the task of ensuring the safety of fans, players, and staff. By proactively addressing potential threats and implementing strict security measures, officials are aiming to prevent any disruptions and allow football enthusiasts to enjoy the games in a safe and secure environment. The success of the security operation will be crucial in determining the overall experience of Euro 2024 and ensuring that the focus remains on the sport rather than any incidents of violence or disorder.
