The Port of Salalah has once again proven its efficiency by retaining its position as the second most efficient container port in the world according to the 2023 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI). Developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the CPPI ranks ports based on vessel turnaround time, with the Port of Salalah achieving 164.72 index points, second only to China’s Yangshan Port. The port’s strategic location, expanding connectivity, and world-class operations contribute to its high performance.

Despite regional disruptions, the Port of Salalah has secured its second-place ranking in the global port efficiency index. The port plays a crucial role as a transshipment hub, boosting the local economy in Dhofar by offering exceptional connectivity for importers and exporters to trade globally. The high efficiency of the Port of Salalah enhances local business confidence and attracts foreign direct investment, contributing to economic growth in the region.

To further enhance its capacity and efficiency, the Port of Salalah is currently undergoing a USD 300 million container terminal upgrade and expansion project. With the arrival of new ZPMC ship-to-shore cranes, the port’s annual capacity will increase from 5 million to 6 million TEU, allowing it to serve as a key hub for the Gemini Cooperation – a collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The additional capacity will also be available for other shipping lines.

Keld Christensen, CEO of the Port of Salalah, emphasized the port’s commitment to continuous performance improvement, even during challenging times. Despite the operational challenges faced in 2023 due to ongoing construction, the Port of Salalah has managed to maintain its position as a top-performing container port. With the completion of the terminal upgrade project in the first quarter of 2025, the port is expected to further enhance its efficiency and capacity.

The Port of Salalah’s success in the CPPI rankings highlights its dedication to providing excellent service to its customers and supporting global trade. As one of the top container ports in the world, the Port of Salalah continues to be a key player in the region, driving economic growth and attracting investment. With its ongoing expansion projects and commitment to performance excellence, the Port of Salalah is poised to maintain its position as a leading container port for years to come.
