The leader of the Democratic Party in Italy, Elly Schlein, made a final appeal to voters in Rome ahead of the EU elections. While the turnout at her rally wasn’t as large as expected, Schlein is trying to win over as many voters as possible before election day. She emphasized the need for a “social Europe” that prioritizes integration and fights against inequalities. Schlein also addressed foreign policy issues, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the war in Ukraine.

In her speech, Schlein criticized the policies of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, focusing on cuts to the public sector. She stressed the importance of saving Italy’s national health system and investing in public education to promote social emancipation. Many of Schlein’s supporters at the rally expressed a renewed interest in the Democratic Party, viewing it as the only alternative to the rise of right-wing parties. They believe that uniting behind Schlein is crucial for strengthening the left in Italy and in Europe.

The upcoming elections will be a test for Schlein’s leadership and will reveal public opinion on the government under Meloni. The results will also shed light on the future relationship between the two female leaders of Italy’s major parties. Schlein’s message of creating a more socially conscious Europe has resonated with her supporters, who see her as a strong leader capable of leading the country in a positive direction.

Overall, Schlein’s efforts to rally support in Rome and Milan show her determination to connect with voters and present a compelling vision for the future of Italy. By focusing on social issues, foreign policy, and critiquing her political opponents, Schlein is positioning herself as a leader who can bring about positive change in the country. The upcoming elections will be a pivotal moment for Italian politics and will determine the direction that Italy takes in the coming years.
