The Nissan Patrol Super Safari, also known as the “VTC”, is a revival of the iconic 5th generation Y61 Nissan Patrol produced from 1997 to 2010. Initially popular in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the Super Safari has made a comeback since 2016. The ‘Al Ostoura’ edition, exclusive to the GCC region, pays homage to this legendary vehicle with its classic design and off-road capabilities.

The exterior of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari retains its old-school charm with a two-box profile and softened edges, reminiscent of SUVs from the early 2000s. The vehicle’s high-riding stance, dual-tone paint job, body stripes, 17-inch alloys, and rear spoiler give it a sportier look. Despite its vintage appeal, the Patrol SS has a timeless design that still looks attractive on the roads today.

Inside the cabin of the Super Safari, you’ll find a near-vintage layout with large plastic trims and old-school features like a four-spoke steering wheel, analogue instrumentation, and tan leather seats. The retrofitted eight-inch infotainment system may seem out of place, but the overall comfort and usability of the interior make it a functional family vehicle with adequate space for all occupants.

Powering the Nissan Patrol Super Safari is a 4.8-litre inline 6-cylinder engine with Valve Timing Control, delivering 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque through a 5-speed automatic transmission. Despite its dated powertrain, the Patrol SS offers a comfortable ride and strong ventilated disc brakes, making it suitable for both on-road and off-road adventures.

While the Super Safari may not be the fastest vehicle on the road, its off-road capabilities are commendable with a reliable 4×4 system, good ground clearance, and impressive approach and departure angles. The vehicle’s lackluster acceleration and vague steering may be drawbacks, but its rugged build and off-road prowess make it a dependable choice for desert driving and other rugged terrains.

Despite its outdated mechanicals and fuel consumption, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari offers a nostalgic driving experience with a blend of modern features like wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, and safety essentials like cruise control and dual airbags. The vehicle’s charm lies in its rugged looks, off-road prowess, and practicality as a family vehicle, making it a unique choice in a sea of modern crossovers.

In conclusion, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari may not be perfect, but its old-school appeal, off-road capabilities, and family functionality make it a standout choice for enthusiasts looking for a rugged and reliable vehicle. With some improvements in power steering, engine performance, and technology, the Super Safari has the potential to compete with contemporary SUVs. As production ends for the Y61 Super Safari, it leaves behind a legacy of a true legend in the SUV world.
