Qatar Museums has recently launched an open call for early-career artists to participate in their Temporary Public Art initiative in Doha, Qatar. The selected artist will have the opportunity to have their proposal commissioned and their artwork installed at Liwan Design Studios and Labs, a historic building in downtown Msheireb. This program is a part of Qatar Museums’ ongoing efforts to provide platforms for emerging talents to express themselves and contribute to the community.
Abdulrahman Al Ishaq, Director of Public Art at Qatar Museums, expressed excitement about the initiative and the prospect of seeing innovative proposals and inspirational artworks come to life. The submitted proposals must meet specific criteria, and artists are encouraged to have strong skills to execute their projects. Support from a mentor is allowed to ensure successful completion. Proposals can include sculptures, installations, or mixed media works, but all artworks must be fabricated locally.
Students have the opportunity to submit proposals either individually or as a group, with a maximum budget of QR 30,000 for each project. The chosen artist will work closely with a curator throughout the project, ensuring a collaborative and supportive environment. Liwan Design Studios and Labs offer cutting-edge facilities for various design disciplines, such as pottery, leatherworking, digital photography, and prototyping, to empower designers in advancing their work and creativity.
This initiative not only provides a platform for early-career artists to showcase their talent but also contributes to the cultural enrichment of the community. By encouraging local fabrication and supporting emerging talents, Qatar Museums aims to foster creativity and innovation in the art scene. The Temporary Public Art program offers a unique opportunity for artists to create engaging and thought-provoking artworks that reflect the vibrancy and diversity of Qatar’s creative community.
The inclusion of sculptures, installations, and mixed media works in the proposals allows artists to explore different mediums and push their creative boundaries. The emphasis on local fabrication highlights the importance of supporting Qatar’s creative industries and encouraging artists to work with local materials and resources. By collaborating closely with a curator, artists can receive valuable guidance and feedback throughout the project, ensuring a successful and impactful outcome for the commissioned artwork.
The location of Liwan Design Studios and Labs in a historic building adds a unique cultural touch to the initiative, further connecting the artworks to the rich heritage and identity of Qatar. By offering state-of-the-art facilities and resources for designers, the program not only supports the artists involved but also contributes to the growth and development of Qatar’s creative community. Through initiatives like Temporary Public Art, Qatar Museums continues to nurture emerging talent and promote artistic expression in the region.
