The Sistine Chapel Choir, also known as the Pope’s Choir, performed a historic concert at the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi on May 30. Having existed for 1500 years, this legendary choir is recognized as the longest-running chorale in the world. This was the first time the Pope’s personal choir performed in the UAE, drawing an eager audience to witness this momentous occasion. The event was organized by the Abu Dhabi Festival and The Apostolic Nunciature to UAE, showcasing the sacred heritage of the church and promoting values of peace and common coexistence.

As the choir members entered the prayer hall of St Francis Church in Abu Dhabi, there was a sense of anticipation among the audience. The choir comprises both adults and children, known as Pueri Cantores, and their performance began with a Gregorian chant that captivated the onlookers. The powerful voices of the choir members resonated through the grand hall, leaving everyone in awe. The repertoire included classical masterpieces by renowned composers, enchanting the audience and creating a sense of wonder.

After performing twelve pieces, the audience gave the choir a standing ovation, showing their appreciation for the mesmerizing performance. The choir members, both adults and boys, were praised for their professionalism and dedication. Even after the initial round of applause, the director announced a final performance, ‘Tu es petrus’, which garnered an even greater response from the audience. This debut performance in the UAE was a remarkable experience for the choir, highlighting their prestigious status as the Pope’s personal choir.

The historic concert not only showcased the choir’s rich history but also emphasized the UAE’s commitment to promoting values of peace and coexistence. The event was a reflection of the principles outlined in the Document on Human Fraternity signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. Archbishop El-Kassis highlighted the close relations between the Holy See and the UAE, emphasizing the significance of this musical event in promoting human fraternity. Monsignor Marcos Pavan described the concert as a historic moment for the Sistine Chapel Choir in the Middle East, applauding the UAE’s values of peaceful coexistence and dialogue.

Overall, the performance by the Sistine Chapel Choir at the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi was a memorable and enchanting experience for all in attendance. The rich history and prestigious status of the choir, coupled with the exquisite renditions of classical masterpieces, left a lasting impression on the audience. The event not only celebrated the choir’s legacy but also served as a testament to the UAE’s dedication to promoting values of peace, diversity, and dialogue. The concert symbolized the harmonious coexistence of different faiths and cultures, echoing the principles of human fraternity and unity.
