The UAE authorities recently announced the implementation of the midday break policy for the 20th consecutive year, starting from June 15 to September 15, 2024. This policy prohibits work under direct sunlight and in open-air areas across the UAE between 12.30pm and 3.00pm to ensure the safety and well-being of employees. Employers who violate this policy will face fines ranging from Dh5,000 for each employee working during the break, up to Dh50,000 for multiple violations.

Certain jobs, such as those related to water supply, electricity, road works, and basic services, are exempted from the midday break policy. Companies engaged in these exempted activities will need to obtain a permit to continue working during the restricted hours. Employers are also required to provide necessary materials such as parasols, shaded areas, fans, drinking water, and first aid equipment to protect their employees working in direct sunlight.

Mohsin Al Nassi, the Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), emphasized the importance of implementing the midday break policy to ensure the health and safety of workers. He stated that it has become a deeply ingrained culture in the UAE’s business community to prioritize the well-being of employees. The ministry will launch awareness campaigns and conduct field visits to ensure compliance with the policy.

It is crucial for companies to adhere to the midday break policy to avoid hefty fines and to protect the health of their employees. Providing a safe and comfortable working environment during extreme temperatures is essential for the overall productivity and well-being of the workforce. Employers should make sure to follow the guidelines set by the authorities and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of their employees working in outdoor environments.

The midday break policy serves as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers, particularly during the hot summer months. By implementing such regulations, the UAE aims to set a standard for workplace safety and ensure that employees are not exposed to unnecessary risks. Companies must cooperate with the authorities and comply with the regulations to create a safe and healthy work environment for their employees.

In conclusion, the implementation of the midday break policy in the UAE underscores the importance of safeguarding the health and well-being of workers. Employers must take proactive measures to protect their employees from the harsh effects of working under direct sunlight. By following the guidelines and providing necessary resources, companies can ensure a safe and comfortable working environment for their workforce during the hot summer months. Compliance with the midday break policy is essential for upholding the standards of workplace safety and promoting the overall welfare of employees in the UAE.
