Minister of Public Health H E Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari of Qatar recently spoke at the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, highlighting the country’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare system. Under the leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar aims to achieve universal health coverage for all citizens by 2030, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
In her speech, Dr. Al Kuwari announced the upcoming launch of the National Health Strategy 2024-2030, which will support Qatar’s Third National Development Strategy and align with the World Health Organization’s Thirteenth and Fourteenth General Programmes of Work. The strategy will focus on enhancing public health, primary healthcare, and healthcare infrastructure while promoting science and innovation to address key challenges in the healthcare system.
Qatar’s successful experience in hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022 has inspired the initiative to promote health and well-being through sport events. The country has received support from several nations for its draft decision on this matter, showcasing the innovative approach Qatar is taking to protect and promote health through government and community collaboration.
Dr. Al Kuwari also highlighted Qatar’s participation in international public health dialogues, such as the World Innovation Summit for Health and the upcoming Global Summit on Mental Health. The latter, scheduled for 2025, will focus on leveraging digital solutions to enhance mental health care, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to advancing healthcare through innovation.
International cooperation and solidarity are key priorities for Qatar, as the country strives to support nations, peoples, and communities in need. Dr. Al Kuwari emphasized the importance of protecting healthcare infrastructure and workers in conflict zones, noting the detrimental impact of attacks on medical facilities and personnel on affected populations. By working together and sharing a common vision, challenges in global health can be overcome for a healthier future for all.
The World Health Assembly, comprising 194 member states, is currently meeting under the theme “Health for All, and All for Health.” This year’s discussions focus on universal health coverage and the importance of collective efforts to ensure access to essential healthcare services for all individuals. Qatar’s involvement in these discussions reflects its commitment to promoting health and well-being on a global scale.
