An-Najah University in Palestine wins debating championship

The 7th International Universities Debating Championship recently concluded with An-Najah National University from Palestine emerging as the winner, marking their first victory in the prestigious competition. The event, held at the Qatar National Convention Centre, saw intense competition from universities worldwide, with the University of Arts and Sciences in Lebanon and Georgetown University in Qatar securing second and third places respectively. The closing ceremony, graced by dignitaries including Minister of Education and Higher Education, H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Qatar, H E Mounir Ghannam, featured Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation (QF), H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, honouring the winning team and top speakers.

Zeina Jamal Hourani, a member of the winning team from An-Najah National University, expressed the challenges faced by her team due to the situation in Palestine, highlighting the significance of their win for Palestine, specifically the Gazan people. Heba Dhaini from Lebanon, whose team secured second place, reflected on the invaluable experience gained from the championship, which allowed them to learn about different cultures and perspectives. Moza Khalid Al Hajri, the top speaker from Georgetown University in Qatar, shared her journey through debate, expressing her happiness in representing her university and country in the competition.

The event also celebrated the diversity of participants, with Mohammed A. Al Marri, the debate ambassador in Qatar, encouraging individuals to push themselves by engaging in discussions on various topics to enhance their skills. Imran bin Salman, the best speaker for non-native Arabic speakers from Malaysia, emphasized the importance of debate in improving communication abilities, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Abdulaziz Barakeh, a debate judge, highlighted the significance of the championship in promoting the Arabic language globally by allowing non-native Arabic speakers to engage with different Arabic teams.

The championship was not only a platform for academic competition but also a space for cultural exchange and mutual learning. Participants not only showcased their debating skills but also gained valuable insights into different perspectives and ideas, further enhancing their intellectual growth. The recognition of the top speakers and teams at the event served as a motivation for participants to continue honing their skills and engaging in meaningful discussions on a global platform. The success of An-Najah National University from Palestine in winning the championship serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the team, overcoming challenges to emerge victorious in the competition.
