President Joe Biden has not yet confirmed his attendance at the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland, causing concern for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy warned that Biden’s absence would be seen as a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin. While the US intends to attend the meeting scheduled for June 16-17, Biden may prioritize a campaign fundraiser over the summit. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of Biden’s presence at the summit, as it would send a strong message of support to Ukraine.

The Swiss peace summit aims to build upon Zelenskyy’s 10-point peace formula and develop a roadmap for future peace processes. Key topics on the agenda include nuclear safety, freedom of navigation, food safety, and humanitarian support. Despite 70 states and organizations confirming their attendance, Russia has not been invited to the summit and has planned parallel events leading up to the meeting. China and Brazil called for the inclusion of Ukraine and Russia in any peace conference, emphasizing the need for direct dialogue and de-escalation of the situation.

The potential absence of President Biden, Russia’s parallel events, and the joint statement by China and Brazil have raised concerns about the credibility of the peace summit. Zelenskyy urged all countries, regardless of their views on the war, to participate in the summit. He emphasized the importance of every voice in working towards peace and called out countries that have remained on the sidelines. The European Commission expressed its commitment to ensuring broad representation at the summit, highlighting its significance in addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s plea for countries to choose between peace and war echoed throughout his speech, urging leaders to take a stand and participate in the peace summit. He emphasized the role of silence in perpetuating conflict, stating that leaders must actively support peace initiatives to make a positive impact. Zelenskyy’s impassioned call for global participation reflects the urgency of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine. His message resonates with the importance of international collaboration in resolving conflicts and promoting peace.

As preparations continue for the peace summit in Switzerland, the absence of a firm commitment from President Biden poses challenges for the event’s success. Zelenskyy’s concerns about Biden’s potential absence reflect broader anxieties about the lack of unified international support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The summit presents an opportunity for world leaders to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. By prioritizing diplomacy and multilateral cooperation, leaders can send a clear message of support to Ukraine and uphold the values of peace and security.

In conclusion, the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland serves as a critical moment for addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and advancing efforts towards peace. President Biden’s decision on attendance will be closely watched, as his presence can signal strong support for Ukraine and the values of the trans-Atlantic alliance. Zelenskyy’s impassioned appeals for global participation underscore the urgency of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis. As world leaders prepare for the summit, the focus remains on fostering dialogue, de-escalating tensions, and working towards a sustainable peace process. The international community’s commitment to the summit will be crucial in determining its effectiveness in addressing the complex challenges facing Ukraine and the broader region.
