The Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, Vinod K Jacob, recently spoke at the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) on the evolving trade and security dynamics between India and the Arab world. The speech highlighted the strong historical ties between the two regions, with trade reaching over $240 billion last year. The Arab world supplies critical resources to India, including crude oil and fertilizers, with significant Indian investments in various sectors such as food, energy, and IT.
Trade relations between India and Bahrain have been thriving, with $1.73 billion worth of trade between the two countries in the last fiscal year. India exports engineering and electronic goods, petroleum products, gems and jewellery, rice, and meat products to Bahrain. Additionally, the Indian Navy plays a significant role in maritime security in the Arabian Sea by combating piracy and drug trafficking, contributing to regional peace and stability.
Defence cooperation between India and Bahrain includes frequent port calls, joint training exercises, and participation in military symposiums. India’s membership in the Combined Maritime Forces further enhances efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the region. Ambassador Jacob also highlighted the Joint High Commission, which facilitates agreements on political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.
People-to-people links between India and the Arab world play a vital role in strengthening bilateral relations. With over 9 million Indians residing in the Arab world, including 340,000 in Bahrain, these individuals significantly contribute to local economies. Cultural exchange programs, youth participation in summits, and training initiatives under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme further enhance the bond between the two regions.
