The findings of the study showed that mice on ketogenic diets had higher levels of cellular aging in organs such as the heart and kidneys compared to the control group. The diet tested on the mice involved high fat intake, with one group consuming Crisco and another group consuming cocoa butter. Both groups showed evidence of organ damage and cellular senescence. The researchers also discovered that the cellular senescence process in the mice was associated with the proteins AMPK and p53. When these pathways were blocked, the levels of cellular senescence decreased.
Despite the potential risks associated with ketogenic diets, the research suggests that the damage caused by the diet may be reversible.
