French startup Ledger has recently started shipping its latest Ledger Stax hardware wallet, designed in collaboration with Tony Fadell, a key designer behind the iPod. The wallet features an E-Ink display, which provides a clear display in daylight while consuming minimal power. The device was initially announced 18 months ago and is now being shipped after the fulfillment of all pre-orders. The Ledger Stax will soon be available on the company’s website once sufficient stock becomes available.
The delay in shipping the Ledger Stax can be attributed to design hurdles, as the curved E-Ink display proved more challenging to produce at scale than expected. Unlike previous models, the Ledger Stax has a larger display with a secure touch screen that interacts directly with the device’s secure element, offering enhanced user-friendliness. Additionally, the Ledger Stax includes a Bluetooth chip, allowing users to initiate cryptocurrency transactions from their phones and validate them on their hardware wallets wirelessly.
Initially sold for €279 during the pre-order phase, the final retail price of the Ledger Stax has not been disclosed yet. The device stores users’ private keys securely, ensuring that even if a computer or phone is compromised, the assets remain safe. While Ledger cannot protect against social engineering and scams, they do offer a subscription product for added security. The Ledger Stax marks the beginning of a production partnership with Foxconn, a consumer electronics manufacturing company, expanding Ledger’s production capabilities.
Ledger has already sold over 6 million devices and secures approximately 20% of the world’s cryptocurrency assets. Sales spiked after the collapse of FTX in November 2022, as consumers sought self-custody solutions to protect their digital assets. Ledger continues to prioritize security and user-friendliness in its products, with the Ledger Stax being the latest addition to their hardware wallet lineup. Customers can look forward to a high-quality, secure, and innovative product from Ledger with the release of the Ledger Stax.
