Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes the skin to become dry, red, itchy, and bumpy, especially during hot weather. In the UAE, eczema affects a significant portion of the population, with at least 24 per cent of adolescents and 11 per cent of adults experiencing its negative impacts. The hot temperatures in the region can worsen eczema symptoms, leading to increased itchiness and discomfort. Healthcare professionals have highlighted the importance of raising awareness about eczema and its impact on a person’s quality of life, sleep, mood, and psychological well-being.

The onset of hot weather, rising temperatures, and humidity can aggravate eczema symptoms, leading to increased sweating and skin dryness. Air conditioning can also contribute to skin dryness, while exposure to irritants such as chlorine from pools, sand, and saltwater can trigger eczema. Perspiration in humid environments can also lead to a condition called miliaria, which causes extreme itching but is different from eczema. Different types of eczema, such as irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis, have common signs to watch out for, including redness, burning sensation, and extreme dryness on the skin.

In hot weather, people tend to take more showers and use shower gels and soaps frequently, which can further dry out the skin and lead to itchiness and eczema. While there is no complete cure for eczema, doctors recommend various options to help prevent and manage the symptoms. Patients are advised to avoid scratching the rash or skin, relieve itchiness with moisturizers or topical steroids, keep fingernails short, lubricate the skin regularly, and avoid anything that worsens symptoms. It is essential for individuals living with eczema to take proper care of their skin and seek medical advice for effective management of the condition.

In conclusion, eczema is a common skin condition that can worsen during hot weather, affecting individuals’ daily lives and well-being. By understanding the causes and triggers of eczema, people can take proactive measures to manage and prevent symptoms. Seeking medical advice and following the recommendations of healthcare professionals can help individuals living with eczema lead a more comfortable and itch-free life. As summer approaches, it is crucial for individuals with eczema to stay informed about how to care for their skin and protect themselves from potential triggers. With proper skincare routine and treatment, it is possible to alleviate eczema symptoms and improve quality of life.
