The 77th Cannes Film Festival has recently concluded, and American film Anora by Sean Baker has taken home the prestigious Palme d’Or award. Anora was selected from a diverse pool of 22 films in competition this year, showcasing an eclectic and vibrant selection of films. Baker dedicated his win to all sex workers and described Anora as a chaotic New York City screwball comedy with a modern fairytale twist. The film resonated with audiences and critics alike, earning praise for breakout performer Mikey Madison and its unique blend of joy and tragedy.

Anora was acquired by US studio NEON, continuing their streak of Palme d’Or wins following previous successes with films like Parasite and Titane. The Grand Prix award went to All We Imagine As Light by Payal Kapadia, marking the first Indian film in Cannes Competition in 30 years. French director Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez was a standout, winning both the Jury Prize and the Best Actress prize for its ensemble cast featuring Selena Gomez and others. Audiard’s celebration of sisterhood in the film resonated with the jury and audiences.

Portuguese director Miguel Gomes received the Best Director prize for his film Grand Tour, a poetic journey that blends black-and-white segments with contemporary scenes. Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig garnered a special Jury Prize for its powerful storytelling and political undertones. Jesse Plemons took home the Best Actor award for his role in Yorgos Lánthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, showcasing his versatile talent across multiple roles.

French director Coralie Fargeat received the Best Screenplay award for The Substance, a bold and gory film that explores societal beauty standards and the impact of misogyny in the entertainment industry. The awards ceremony featured standing ovations for deserving winners and an honorary Palme for George Lucas, presented by Francis Ford Coppola. The festival showcased a range of compelling films from diverse filmmakers, highlighting the talent and creativity present in the global film industry.

Overall, the 77th Cannes Film Festival was a success, with Anora by Sean Baker taking home the prestigious Palme d’Or award. The festival featured a diverse selection of films from around the world, with standout performances and unique storytelling approaches. From the chaotic energy of Anora to the poetic journey of Grand Tour, each film brought something different to the table, captivating audiences and earning critical acclaim. Congratulations to all the winners and filmmakers who showcased their talents at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
