A 26-year-old woman, Layla, underwent a successful complex surgery to remove a large ovarian cyst during her 26th week of pregnancy. She had been experiencing severe pain and complications, leading her to seek treatment at Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women and Children in M42. Dr. Mohammed Kattan, a urogynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, recommended urgent surgery after diagnostic scans revealed the sizeable ovarian cyst and suspicion of torsion.

The surgical procedure was challenging due to the size and positioning of the cyst, requiring a laparoscopic approach. This minimally invasive technique involves small incisions through which a camera and surgical tools are inserted to perform internal surgeries with fewer cuts and faster recovery times. Dr. Kattan utilized a modified ‘Hasson entry technique’ to access the uterus and carefully navigate Layla’s abdomen. The surgical team worked collaboratively to manage the complexities of the procedure, from dissecting tissues to detaching the cyst.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Kattan praised his team’s collaborative efforts in ensuring a safe and successful outcome for both Layla and her unborn child. Layla expressed her appreciation for the team’s approach, which prioritized meeting her needs and building trust throughout the process. Following the operation, Layla required a few weeks of recovery before returning to the hospital with her newborn.

The success of Layla’s surgery received recognition from doctors abroad who spoke highly of Dr. Kattan’s work and the complexity of the procedure. Layla emphasized the relief she felt post-surgery, noting that while recovery took a few weeks and there was some different pain afterward, the initial pain that led her to seek treatment had disappeared. The collaborative efforts of the surgical team and Dr. Kattan’s expertise in utilizing the Hasson entry technique proved instrumental in achieving a positive outcome for Layla and her unborn child.
