Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are set to be installed at paid parking zones in Dubai, as per an announcement made by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa). Dewa has signed an agreement to increase the number of EV ‘Green Charger’ stations in prime locations managed by Parkin, the largest supplier of paid public parking facilities in the Emirate. The initiative comes as the number of EVs in Dubai reached over 30,000 by the end of April 2024, with expectations for this number to grow in the coming years.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa, highlighted the increasing popularity of EVs in Dubai, with over 15,000 registered customers in the EV Green Charger initiative by the end of March 2024. Parkin is also examining opportunities for monetization in the EV sector, recognizing the role parking facilities can play in supporting the transition to EVs by providing easy access to charging services. This move aligns with Parkin’s growth strategy, offering a significant opportunity to enhance its platform with the incorporation of EV charging facilities.

With over 197,000 parking spaces in Dubai, Parkin’s extensive parking network aims to facilitate EV adoption by offering convenient charging solutions to customers. The incorporation of EV charging into its facilities serves as a complementary aspect of the company’s growth strategy, enabling it to expand the capabilities of its platform and support the increasing demand for EV infrastructure in the Emirate. Since 2015, the EV Green Charger initiative has powered a cumulative electric vehicle distance of around 130 million kilometers, showcasing the positive impact of such initiatives on sustainable transportation.

To access the EV charging services, customers need to register their EVs with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, following which Dewa creates an EV Green Charger account for them. This enables customers to charge their EV within one hour, ensuring a seamless and efficient charging experience. Additionally, all customers, including unregistered ones, can utilize the guest mode feature to charge their EVs, further enhancing accessibility to EV charging facilities across Dubai. The initiative aims to encourage more individuals to switch to electric vehicles by providing convenient and reliable charging options in key locations across the city.
