Doha, Qatar: Abdullah Al Muhannadi, a student at Renad Academy, proudly introduced his father, lawyer Khalid Al Muhannadi, during a special event at the school. Since Abdullah was diagnosed with autism, his father has been a constant source of support, prioritizing his son’s development and integration into society. Together, they have explored Qatar, traveled, and engaged in social activities, forming a strong bond that has enhanced Abdullah’s self-confidence and emotional stability. Studies have shown that active parental involvement positively impacts a child’s overall development, especially for those with autism, who require emotional and educational support tailored to their special needs.
Dr. Khaled Al Naama of DIFI emphasized the importance of emotional support from parents in helping children with autism overcome challenges and develop social skills for independence. He highlighted the significant role fathers play in communication, relationship-building, and providing a positive model for their children. Isolating children with autism from social events can lead to feelings of segregation and a lack of belonging, whereas involvement in public spaces from a young age, as seen in Abdullah’s case, promotes comfort and safety.
Khalid Al Muhannadi stressed the importance of fathers actively participating in their child’s life, especially at school events, to enhance their mental health and prevent bullying and isolation. By prioritizing their children with autism and providing love, care, and presence, parents can significantly impact their well-being and development. Dr. Al Naama highlighted the need for autism awareness campaigns to educate the public about the symptoms and behaviors of individuals with autism, fostering understanding, integration, and acceptance.
Abdullah’s story serves as a reminder to parents of children with autism to prioritize their child’s needs, be proud of them, and actively engage in their lives. Khalid Al Muhannadi reflected on how his son has added meaning to his life, teaching him resilience and motivating him to advocate for opportunities for Abdullah and his peers. He encouraged parents to embrace their children with autism, provide unconditional love and support, and remain actively involved in their journey.
