Annual Food Safety and Nutrition Summit begins

The third annual Food Safety and Nutrition Summit, hosted by the Ministry of Public Health in Doha, Qatar, kicked off to bring together representatives from the US government, academic institutions, international and regional organisations, as well as speakers from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The summit serves as a platform to exchange information on the best practices in food safety and nutrition, discussing national policies and systems, and addressing key challenges in the area. Minister of Public Health, H E Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, highlighted the importance of food safety at national and global levels, especially with the increasing challenges and burden posed by foodborne diseases.

In her speech, Dr. Al Kuwari emphasized the significance of hosting such summits as effective tools in mitigating risks associated with food safety. She mentioned Qatar’s achievements in this field, including obtaining international accreditations for all inspection and analysis activities and launching the electronic food monitoring system (Watheq) which adopts international best practices in managing risks. H E Timmy T Davis, Ambassador of the United States to Qatar, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving shared goals, stating that leveraging partnerships in the food safety sector can have a greater impact than working alone.

The summit provides a platform for experts to discuss and exchange information on best practices in food safety and nutrition. Representatives from various sectors come together to address national policies and systems, as well as to tackle the challenges faced in ensuring food safety. With the increasing burden of foodborne diseases globally, the summit aims to shed light on the importance of food safety at both national and international levels. Qatar’s achievements in this field, such as obtaining international accreditations and launching the electronic food monitoring system, demonstrate the country’s commitment to adopting the best practices in food safety.

Dr. Al Kuwari highlighted the importance of hosting such summits as effective tools in mitigating risks associated with food safety. She emphasized the need for collaboration at regional and international levels to address the evolving challenges in ensuring food safety. The summit serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices in food safety and nutrition, aiming to strengthen ties and partnerships in this critical area. Ambassador Davis echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of leveraging partnerships to achieve greater impact in the food safety sector.
