Australia and New Zealand are coming to the aid of travelers stranded in New Caledonia after unrest shut down the international airport. The Australian government is sending planes to evacuate its citizens, with two planes set to depart on Tuesday. New Zealand is also sending flights to bring home about 50 people. The unrest was sparked by changes in local election laws, causing riots that resulted in six deaths and numerous injuries.

The situation in New Caledonia remains tense, with fires, looting, and roadblocks causing chaos. The French government has deployed extra police and the military to restore order and ensure the safety of residents and tourists. Despite the ongoing turmoil, efforts are being made to evacuate those with pressing needs, prioritizing the most vulnerable individuals. Both Australia and New Zealand are working closely with French authorities to coordinate the rescue mission.

Tourists stranded in New Caledonia have been facing challenges such as food shortages and limited access to essential services. The closure of the airport has left thousands of people waiting to leave or enter the territory. The Australian government has issued travel warnings advising against attempting to reach the airport independently due to safety concerns. Efforts are being made to clear roadblocks and debris to ensure the safe passage of those in need of evacuation.

Australian tourist Maxwell Winchester expressed relief at the prospect of being rescued after being confined to a resort near Nouméa for over a week. While acknowledging that those with urgent needs will be prioritized for evacuation, he welcomed the opportunity to have a way out in the coming days. The French High Commission in New Caledonia has been working to restore order and security along the main roads, with gendarmes neutralizing roadblocks and clearing debris left by the unrest.

The escalating situation in New Caledonia has prompted both Australia and New Zealand to take swift action to assist their citizens and other tourists stranded in the territory. The governments of both countries are working in collaboration with French authorities to ensure the safe evacuation of those in need. With ongoing unrest and security concerns, efforts are being made to restore order and provide essential support to those affected by the crisis.

As the situation in New Caledonia continues to unfold, the importance of international cooperation and support becomes paramount in addressing the challenges faced by stranded travelers. The joint efforts of Australia, New Zealand, and France in responding to the crisis demonstrate solidarity and commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by the unrest. The coordinated evacuation efforts aim to provide timely assistance to those in need and facilitate their return to their home countries.
