The Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, has launched the Katara Space Science Programme in Doha, Qatar, to promote awareness and education in space science and astronomy. This initiative is designed for students, researchers, and the wider community to advance scientific research and understanding. The programme will be implemented in collaboration with space scientists from around the world, with a focus on engaging students, researchers, and specialists in astronomy and space sciences through educational, cultural, and training initiatives guided by experienced experts.

At a press conference, Katara General Manager Prof. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti expressed excitement about the partnership with leading space scientists, including former NASA Deputy Chief Technologist Dr. Jim Adams and Founder and President of MAPS International, Rashmi Agarwal. He emphasized Katara’s dedication to promoting astronomical education and its commitment to expanding knowledge in astronomy and space sciences through partnerships with universities, educational institutes, and research organizations. The goal of the programme is to develop a skilled workforce in line with Qatar National Vision 2030’s goal of diversifying the economy and nurturing future space science leaders.

Dr. Jim Adams commended Katara’s support and highlighted the programme’s potential impact in inspiring the next generation of space scientists. He stressed that the Katara Space Science Programme, launching through the Al Thuraya Planetarium, is the first of its kind in Qatar and the region. The programme will feature lectures and training workshops by leading scientists from international institutions, attracting students and space enthusiasts. Recently retired from NASA, where he was involved in over 30 spaceflight missions, Dr. Adams emphasized the importance of educating and inspiring future space science leaders.

Rashmi Agarwal announced that the Al Thuraya Planetarium will host a series of international events focused on space science and astronomy in coordination with global space agencies. The programme’s official launch is scheduled for June 25 to 27 and will feature lectures and workshops for students aged 13-18, with a particular focus on climate science. Agarwal also revealed plans for a monthly Katara Astronomy Forum and an art exhibition connecting arts and space sciences to enhance the cultural and educational experience of the participating audience and the public.

Overall, the Katara Space Science Programme aims to advance scientific research and understanding in space science and astronomy by engaging students, researchers, and specialists through educational, cultural, and training initiatives. The collaboration with leading space scientists from around the world, including former NASA Deputy Chief Technologist Dr. Jim Adams and Founder and President of MAPS International, Rashmi Agarwal, highlights Katara’s commitment to promoting astronomical education and fostering future space science leaders in line with Qatar National Vision 2030’s goal of diversifying the economy. The programme’s launch through the Al Thuraya Planetarium, with lectures and workshops by international scientists, is set to inspire the next generation of space enthusiasts and contribute to the advancement of space science education in the region.
