Oleksandr Usyk’s victory over Tyson Fury in Riyadh made him the first undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion in a quarter of a century, which led Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to lead the tributes to Usyk. Usyk, a former soldier in the Ukrainian army, described the win as a great moment for him, his family, and his country. The victory was seen as a symbol of Ukrainian endurance and strength, with Zelensky stating that “the Ukrainians hit hard” and all opponents will be defeated. The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, emphasized that Usyk’s win showed that Ukrainians are capable of defeating strong opponents.

Former world heavyweight champions Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, who are also Ukrainian, praised Usyk for his victory, with Wladimir Klitschko stating that losing was not an option for Usyk. Usyk, who was accused in the past of sitting on the fence over Russia’s annexation of Crimea, has since gained the full support of the Ukrainian armed forces following his victory. The win has been seen as a boost for the nation, with many Ukrainians expressing their pride and support for Usyk. By adding the WBC title to his collection, Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999, solidifying his place in boxing history.

During the fight, Usyk outperformed Fury in the early rounds before Fury hit his stride in the fourth round with vicious body shots. However, Usyk turned the tide in the eighth round, delivering powerful punches to Fury’s head that left him reeling. Despite Fury’s efforts to hang on until the end, Usyk’s dominance earned him the victory on the judges’ scorecards. The emotional Usyk expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the support he received from his family and his country, making it a significant moment for him.

The win has been celebrated as a symbol of Ukrainian strength and resilience, with many seeing it as a victory for the entire nation. Usyk’s triumph has united the Ukrainian people and renewed their sense of national pride in the face of ongoing challenges. The victory holds historical significance as Usyk becomes the first undisputed heavyweight champion in decades, marking a new era in Ukrainian boxing. The support and admiration for Usyk’s accomplishment have transcended the world of sports, resonating deeply with the Ukrainian people and their collective identity.

In the aftermath of the fight, Ukrainian figures from various fields have praised Usyk and his achievement, highlighting the significance of his win for the nation. Usyk’s victory serves as a source of inspiration and hope for Ukrainians, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, they can overcome any challenge. The unity and patriotism displayed by the Ukrainian people in celebrating Usyk’s victory reflect a shared sense of pride and resilience in the face of adversity. As Usyk basks in his historic triumph, he has not only secured his place in boxing history but also inspired a nation to believe in its strength and potential for greatness.
