Oman celebrates International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector on May 18 each year to recognize and empower women in the maritime sector. Khadija Mubarak Al-Siyabi, a marine safety specialist, highlighted the important role of Omani women in leadership positions in the maritime sector. She mentioned that the government is encouraging companies to provide job opportunities for women and offer incentives to empower them in this field. Basma Hamad Al Hashimi, Chief Marine Navigation Officer at ASYAD Company, expressed pride in working in the maritime sector and the recognition women receive for their contributions.

Omani women working in the maritime sector have made significant contributions to the sector’s economy and have achieved prominent positions in marine fields. The government is focusing on providing training and necessary skills to empower women in the maritime sector. Basma Hamad Al Hashimi noted that celebrating International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector in Oman highlights the status of women and enriches their capabilities. She emphasized the importance of continuously sharpening skills to advance their positions in the sector.

The International Maritime Organisation adopted a decision in December 2021 to designate May 18 of each year as International Day for Women Working in the Maritime Sector. The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, participates in this celebration annually. The theme for this occasion is ‘Safe Horizons… Women Shape the Future of Maritime Safety’. The celebration aims to showcase the essential role women play in the maritime sector and highlight their achievements and contributions to the industry.

The government of Oman is keen on promoting gender diversity and inclusivity in the maritime sector. Providing job opportunities and training for women in the sector demonstrates a commitment to empowering women in leadership positions. The recognition of International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector celebrates the achievements and contributions of women working in various roles within the maritime industry. The event serves as a platform to acknowledge and honour the hard work, dedication, and expertise of Omani women in the maritime sector.

Empowering women in the maritime sector not only benefits individual women but also contributes to the overall growth and success of the industry. Recognizing the talents and skills of women in leadership positions helps to create a more diverse and inclusive maritime workforce. The celebration of International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector is an opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of women in the field and inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in maritime-related industries. By providing support and recognition to women in the maritime sector, Oman is paving the way for a more gender-balanced and prosperous industry.
