Bahrain is taking significant steps towards boosting its green cover by launching an ambitious plan to plant resilient tree species tailored to thrive in the unique climate of the country. This initiative is part of Bahrain’s commitment to the environment, as seen in its pledge to cut emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. A key aspect of this commitment is the goal to quadruple mangrove coverage and double tree coverage across Bahrain. To achieve these targets, the National Plan for Afforestation (2022-2035) was unveiled, aiming to increase the tree population from 1.8 million to 3.6 million by 2035 by planting 270,000 trees annually.

To support this initiative, the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture issued a tender seeking suppliers for a variety of tree species. These trees will be nursery-grown, with an overall height of 1000mm, grown in containers of 5 litres, and free from disease and harmful insects. The tender process requires a BD500 bond valid for 180 days and the submission of compliance and price determination certificates. Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can benefit from a 10% preference in the financial evaluation stage by presenting the “SMEs Classification Certificate.”

Bahrain’s large-scale greening project is expected to transform the country’s landscape, enhancing its natural beauty and contributing significantly to global climate efforts. As the Kingdom continues to work towards its environmental goals, the planting of trees and mangroves plays a crucial role in combating climate change and preserving the environment. By doubling tree coverage and quadrupling mangrove coverage, Bahrain is committing to creating a greener and more sustainable future for its citizens and the planet.

The Ministry’s efforts are driven by the vision of creating a more environmentally friendly Bahrain, in line with the commitments made at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). By increasing the green cover through the National Plan for Afforestation, Bahrain is taking crucial steps towards achieving its emissions reduction targets and transitioning to a more sustainable economy. The tender process for suppliers of tree species marks the beginning of a new phase in Bahrain’s environmental journey, highlighting the importance of collaboration with MSMEs in achieving these ambitious goals.

This initiative represents a significant opportunity for local businesses to contribute to Bahrain’s environmental goals while also benefiting from the economic opportunities that come with it. By supporting the planting of trees and mangroves, suppliers can play a key role in helping Bahrain achieve its target of net-zero emissions by 2060. The focus on tree planting also underscores the importance of nature-based solutions in climate action, highlighting the vital role that trees play in sequestering carbon and improving air quality.

In conclusion, Bahrain’s commitment to boosting its green cover through tree planting and mangrove restoration is a vital step towards building a more sustainable and resilient future for the country. By embarking on this ambitious plan, Bahrain is not only enhancing its natural beauty but also contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. Through partnerships with suppliers and MSMEs, Bahrain is paving the way for a greener and more environmentally friendly future, showcasing its dedication to creating a more sustainable world for future generations.
