In an effort to improve sanitary hygiene in public toilets, students from a Dubai university have developed affordable commode covers. Priced at less than Dh10, these covers aim to protect against disease-causing bacteria and fungi that can be found on toilet seats. The portable applicator, created by a group of cross-disciplinary students from the Canadian University Dubai (CUD), contains plastic seat covers for easy use.

One of the students, Hanna Gajol, highlighted the importance of maintaining clean public toilets, especially when traveling abroad. The idea for the commode covers, named SafeSeat, stemmed from the anxiety many people feel when using public toilets and the fear of germs. The team behind SafeSeat also includes Ayesha Jumani, Rachelle Hombria, Ziad Akiki, and Romell Surti, all of whom are studying ‘Entrepreneurship’.

SafeSeat functions differently from traditional toilet seat covers as it comes in a durable applicator with 50 biodegradable plastic seat covers. The product is designed to dissolve when flushed and is meant to be a more convenient and hygienic option for users. Unlike other plastic seat covers that require manual attachment, SafeSeat includes a hook to reduce contact with germs. The product is chemical-free, making it safe for users with allergies or sensitivities.

With the prototype ready, the team is planning to launch SafeSeat by the end of the year. They are currently sourcing raw materials from suppliers in China and assembling the components in Dubai. The initial production run will consist of 50,000 units, with a selling price of around Dh10 per unit. SafeSeat will be available for purchase through the team’s e-commerce website, popup stores in Dubai, and pharmacies.

The innovative commode covers aim to address the health concerns associated with using public toilets and provide a more practical and budget-friendly solution for consumers. By combining convenience, hygiene, and affordability, SafeSeat hopes to revolutionize the way people approach public restroom hygiene. With plans to expand production and distribution in the future, the team behind SafeSeat is determined to make a positive impact on public health and sanitation practices.
