As summer arrives in the UAE after the spotting of the ‘Al Shurtan’ constellation, temperatures are soaring above 40°C. Beachgoers are cautioned about dangerous currents known as ‘Al Sayura’ or the drawing current. President of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, explained that the rising temperatures and dropping humidity coincide with the appearance of Al Shurtan, consisting of two stars. The Emirates Astronomical Association announced the sighting of the constellation on May 12 from the eastern side of the country.
Al Jarwan warned beachgoers about the formation of dangerous currents and highlighted the intensification of dry and dusty northwesterly winds called ‘Barah’ until mid-July. This is followed by the strengthening of ‘Sumoom’, hot and dry winds. While the Arabian Gulf calms down, the Arabian Sea and the northern Indian Ocean experience turbulence, marking the start of the tropical activity season. This season also marks the first ripening of dates, figs, and mango alongside the drying of pastures.
Al Jarwan mentioned the start of the fishing season in the Arabian Gulf, with species like barracuda, groupers, and sharks thriving. Excess fish are preserved by salting.
