Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, and University of Sharjah have all made it to the 2024 edition of the Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Khalifa University leads the country, followed by UAE University and University of Sharjah. Khalifa University has risen to 876th place from last year’s 892nd, with an improvement in research performance. UAE University has climbed 65 spots to 1113th, while University of Sharjah has climbed 146 spots to 1253rd. These rankings are based on various factors such as quality of education, employability, quality of faculty, and research performance.
CWUR analyzed 62 million outcome-based data points to rank universities from around the world. The UAE is seeing improvements against rivals worldwide, with its leading universities rising in the standings. The top universities that made it to the Global 2000 list include institutions from 94 countries. CWUR uses seven objective and outcome-based indicators grouped into four areas to rank universities. The UAE’s global share in scientific research has grown significantly in the last five years, showing the country’s competitiveness in the international arena of science and technology.
While the US continues to claim eight of the top ten places globally, it is facing challenges from competitors worldwide. Only 90 US institutions have shown improvement from last year, with several institutions falling in the rankings. Europe, on the other hand, has 639 institutions in the top 2000, but the outlook for 2024 is uncertain due to increasing international competition. In the United Kingdom, Cambridge and Oxford’s success contrasts with the decline of nearly sixty percent of UK institutions in the rankings.
Overall, the rankings highlight the global competitiveness of universities and the need for continued investment in research and development. The rise of Chinese universities as strong competitors to Western institutions underscores the importance of remaining proactive in the academic landscape. The UAE’s progress in the rankings reflects its commitment to excellence in education and research, positioning it as a key player in the global university rankings.
