In an effort to develop the internet and digital infrastructure in Qatar, the Qatar Internet Exchange Point (QIXP) has recently welcomed two new members: Packet Clearing House (PCH) and Zenlayer. PCH operates the world’s first and largest Domain Name System content delivery network, while Zenlayer is known as the world’s first hyperconnected cloud provider. These new members join a group of entities representing service providers, academic institutions, and other local organizations to exchange local data and information over the internet within Qatar.
QIXP, a non-profit carrier-neutral Internet Exchange Point, was established to improve the speed of access to data and information by allowing internet service providers, digital content providers, academic institutions, and government and private entities to exchange data locally instead of outside the country. By localizing data traffic within Qatar, QIXP aims to enhance the quality of the internet and ensure faster and more secure access to hosted digital content for end users. This move aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third Qatar National Development Strategy, which prioritize providing world-class telecom services and improving the quality of life for citizens and residents.
Ali Al Suwaidi, the Director of the Technical Affairs Department at the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) and Chairman of the QIXP Steering Committee, expressed pleasure in welcoming the new members. He highlighted the benefits that the inclusion of PCH and Zenlayer will bring to all QIXP members, emphasizing the importance of localizing data traffic to improve the overall quality of the internet. Suwaidi also emphasized the role of QIXP in providing advanced infrastructural and informational frameworks, developing the Information and Communication Technology sector, and contributing to the diversification of the local economy.
The QIXP Steering Committee, established by Cabinet Decision No. (24) of 2018, aims to leverage the country’s existing infrastructure to facilitate the exchange of internet traffic between Internet Service Providers’ systems and content delivery networks. As part of its efforts, the committee has focused on renewing QIXP’s infrastructure and expanding its presence to three data centers in multiple geographical locations. These initiatives seek to further enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of internet exchange within Qatar, contributing to the overall development of the country’s digital ecosystem and supporting its economic diversification and growth goals.
The joining of Packet Clearing House and Zenlayer to the Qatar Internet Exchange Point represents a significant milestone in the development of Qatar’s internet and digital infrastructure. As part of an ongoing effort to enhance the quality of the internet and improve access to digital content within the country, QIXP continues to attract new members and expand its presence across multiple data centers. These initiatives align with Qatar’s broader vision of becoming a leading player in the global digital economy, supporting the growth and diversification of the local economy and improving the quality of life for its citizens and residents. By fostering collaboration among service providers, academic institutions, and other entities, QIXP plays a crucial role in driving innovation and growth in Qatar’s digital ecosystem.
