A new sustainable marine promenade for people with visual impairments has opened in Al Wakra Public Beach in Doha, Qatar. The 500m-long walkway is equipped with Braille signboards and made of recycled materials, making it the first of its kind in the region. The project was inaugurated by Director General of Al Wakra Municipality Eng Mohammed Hassan Al Nuaimi, and attended by various dignitaries including the Ambassadors of Belgium and France to Qatar.

Al Nuaimi highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional partnerships with the private sector to serve all segments of society, including those with visual impairments. The initiative aims to improve the quality of life and promote environmentally friendly practices while providing opportunities for visitors with special needs to walk, enjoy, and recreate. The project is part of a larger initiative to develop a sustainable private beach that serves people with disabilities of all categories.

Head of the Sustainability Projects Unit in Al Wakrah Municipality Eng Soha Mahmoud Tufiliah explained that the sea walkway is the second phase of the project that began in 2022. The first phase involved establishing a sea walkway for people with mobility disabilities and the elderly, connecting them to the sea using environmentally friendly materials. In April 2022, a sustainable sea promenade for people with disabilities and the elderly was opened, attracting many visitors and contributing to Al Wakrah Municipality receiving the UNESCO Learning Cities Award for the year 2021.

The sustainable sea walkway project in Al Wakra aims to provide equal access to recreational opportunities for people with disabilities and encourage environmentally friendly practices. By utilizing recycled materials and Braille signboards, the walkway sets a new standard for inclusive and sustainable urban development in the region. The success of the project has garnered recognition from international organizations such as UNESCO, highlighting Qatar’s commitment to creating accessible and environmentally conscious public spaces.

The opening of the sustainable marine promenade in Al Wakra Public Beach marks a significant milestone in the development of inclusive and environmentally friendly urban spaces in Qatar. The project not only provides equal access to recreational opportunities for people with disabilities but also contributes to the overall quality of life in the community. By collaborating with the private sector and implementing sustainable practices, Al Wakra Municipality is setting a positive example for other cities in the region to follow.

In conclusion, the sustainable sea walkway project in Al Wakra is a testament to Qatar’s commitment to creating inclusive and environmentally friendly public spaces. By providing equal access to recreational opportunities for people with disabilities, the project is not only improving the quality of life for all members of the community but also setting a new standard for sustainable urban development in the region. With the success of the project being recognized internationally, Al Wakra Municipality is paving the way for a more accessible and environmentally conscious future for cities in Qatar and beyond.
