Omani gastroenterologist Dr. Khalid Al Shmwsy has made the courageous decision to remain in Gaza despite the worsening situation due to the intensified attacks by the Israeli army. In a post on his official social media account, Dr. Shmwsy stated that he is standing in solidarity with the people of Gaza and will continue to work and provide medical care during this challenging time. He emphasized that his life is not more valuable than any child in Gaza, and there are many individuals in Gaza who are in need of assistance and support.

During his time in Gaza, Dr. Khalid shared some heartbreaking experiences and stories of the patients he treated at the European Hospital in Gaza. One case involved an 8-year-old boy who swallowed a piece of metal, and another case where a 5-year-old girl ingested a watch battery out of extreme hunger. Dr. Khalid highlighted the lack of medical resources in Gaza, particularly in the field of endoscopy, which is essential for treating such cases. He expressed his disbelief at the inhumane conditions that children in Gaza are forced to endure due to the ongoing conflict.

Despite the dangers and challenges he faced in Gaza, Dr. Khalid remained dedicated to providing medical care to those in need. He witnessed the devastating effects of the heavy bombing and fierce battles that took place near him, including cases of severe injuries and amputations among children. Dr. Khalid condemned the violence and highlighted the tragic consequences of war on innocent civilians, particularly children who are left without limbs and a bleak future as a result of the conflict.

Dr. Khalid arrived in Gaza on the 2nd of May with a team of doctors from various specialities, with support from the FAJR scientific organisation. The organisation praised Dr. Khalid’s dedication to providing critical care in challenging conditions and expressed their commitment to making a real impact in Gaza. They acknowledged the hard work and tireless efforts of Dr. Khalid and his team in providing much-needed medical assistance to the people of Gaza during this difficult time.

Despite the risks and dangers involved in staying in Gaza, Dr. Khalid’s decision to remain and continue his work demonstrates his unwavering commitment to serving those in need and providing essential medical care during times of crisis. His selfless actions serve as an inspiration to others and highlight the importance of solidarity and compassion in the face of adversity. As the situation in Gaza continues to worsen, Dr. Khalid’s presence and dedication to helping those in need provide a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos and destruction.
