Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) recently celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2024 at a ceremony held at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s Multaqa Students Center in Qatar Foundation’s Education City. The event saw 67 students from various art and design programs, including Art History, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Painting + Printmaking, and MFA, receiving their diplomas. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the graduating class showcased resilience and creativity in navigating through a period of remote learning and adaptation to new technologies.

The commencement ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including H E Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, US Ambassador H E Timmy Davis, and Francisco Marmolejo, President of Higher Education at Qatar Foundation. The keynote address was delivered by Sumayya Vally, Founder and Principal of Counterspace, an award-winning architecture and research practice based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Vally urged the graduates to hold onto their ideals and creativity, emphasizing the importance of continuing to explore, experiment, and imagine beyond the confines of their academic environment.

During the event, VCUarts Qatar’s Dean Amir Berbić commended the Class of 2024 for their courage and determination in overcoming the challenges presented by the pandemic. He acknowledged their adaptability to remote learning and their ability to maintain a strong commitment to their craft throughout the uncertain times. The graduates were also congratulated by guests from VCUarts Qatar’s home campus in Richmond, US, including Dr. Michael Rao, President of VCU, Dr. Carmenita Higginbotham, Dean of VCUarts, and Dr. Scott Breuninger, Dean of the Honors College, VCU.

Dr. Michael Rao, President of VCU, highlighted the 25th anniversary of VCU’s partnership with the Qatar Foundation, praising VCUarts Qatar for its contribution to the field of creativity and design. He lauded the campus for cultivating a generation of talented creators, designers, artists, and scholars, thanks to a culture of innovation inspired by the faculty. The ceremony also saw the recognition of Kaltham Essa Al Fakhroo and Selma Fejzullaj as Co-valedictorians, both of whom shared their experiences and emotions with the audience.

Overall, the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024 at VCUarts Qatar was a momentous occasion, celebrating the achievements and perseverance of the students in the face of unprecedented challenges. As they embark on the next chapter of their lives, the graduates have been encouraged to carry forward the spirit of creativity, exploration, and adaptability instilled in them during their time at the university. With a strong foundation in art and design, the Class of 2024 is well-equipped to make a positive impact in their respective fields and contribute to the global creative community.
