The European Union and its citizens have a complex relationship filled with mixed perceptions and mistrust, yet high expectations. A recent Euroconsumers survey revealed low consumer satisfaction with the EU, particularly in areas such as inflation and the cost of living crisis. Despite this, when presented with concrete consumer measures such as the right to get products repaired or better protection against energy providers, perception shifts positively. However, many citizens are unaware that these consumer wins are thanks to the European Union.

The lack of awareness about the EU among citizens is concerning, with many feeling uninformed by national media and unsure about the origin of consumer-empowering rules. Despite this, there is a clear mandate from citizens for the EU to address important issues such as access to affordable medicines, sustainable food, and fighting financial scams. Despite the skepticism and mistrust towards the EU, high hopes and expectations for the organization are expressed by the majority of citizens.

On June 9th, European citizens have the opportunity to cast their vote in the European elections and have their voices heard. It is crucial for consumers to show the right direction for Europe if they want the EU to lead for consumers. Treating the European elections as a second-rate event is not the right approach, as the impact of what happens in Brussels on daily lives cannot be underestimated. With one month to go until the elections, there is still time for citizens to inform themselves about the different political election programs and make an informed decision when voting.

The disconnect between citizens and the EU highlights the importance of informed voting and active participation in the democratic process. Despite the lack of awareness about the EU’s role in consumer protection and empowerment, citizens need to hold their leaders accountable and expect them to act in the best interest of Europeans. The outcome of the European elections will determine whether Europe moves towards a more consumer-friendly future or remains stagnant in addressing important issues affecting citizens.

In conclusion, the relationship between European citizens and the EU is complex, with mixed perceptions and high expectations. Despite low consumer satisfaction with the EU’s overall track record, there is a clear mandate from citizens for the organization to address important issues such as access to affordable medicines and sustainable food. As the European elections approach, it is crucial for citizens to inform themselves about the different political election programs and make an informed decision when casting their vote. By actively participating in the democratic process, citizens can shape the future of Europe and ensure that their voices are heard.
