The Saudi Ministry of Education is currently evaluating the three-semester system in public education and will announce the results upon completion of the study. Minister of Education Yousef Al-Benyan stated that the higher authorities have been tasked with studying the impact and challenges of the three semesters. Specialists from within and outside the Ministry of Education are conducting research on the benefits, opportunities, and challenges of the new system, which was introduced last academic year.

During a session at the Shoura Council, Al-Benyan briefed members on major education files, answered inquiries, and discussed the ministry’s future plans and programs. He expressed gratitude to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support of the education sector, emphasizing that this support is crucial for achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Human Capacity Development Program. Al-Benyan highlighted the shift in the education system from being an operator to a regulatory body and the emphasis on developing a globally competitive generation with a focus on skills and capabilities.

The Minister stressed that curricula in Saudi Arabia are aligned with international standards and are developed with input from various stakeholders to meet the needs of the twenty-first century. He also mentioned the ministry’s focus on serving students with special needs, with an expected increase in enrollment from 42 percent in 2020 to 72 percent in 2023. Policies and programs are being developed to provide quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all students, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

In terms of university education, Al-Benyan discussed efforts to strengthen the role of the Universities Affairs Council in organizing and developing the education system, bridging the gap between academic outputs and labor market demands, and promoting scientific research and innovation. The ministry is working collaboratively to address challenges and find sustainable solutions. Regarding special education programs for students with disabilities, the minister highlighted an increase in employment opportunities for people with special needs in educational positions and the establishment of a dedicated department in the ministry to manage this area.

Overall, the Saudi Ministry of Education is committed to continuous improvement in the education system, including evaluating new initiatives like the three-semester system, aligning curricula with international standards, and enhancing support for students with special needs. The ministry’s focus on developing a globally competitive generation and promoting lifelong learning opportunities reflects its dedication to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and driving sustainable development in the country. Collaboration with stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and relevant authorities, is key to ensuring the success of these initiatives and providing high-quality education for all students in Saudi Arabia.
