Abu Dhabi has announced a new ‘Dark Sky Policy’ that aims to inspect the lighting inside homes and offices to address the growing concern of light pollution. The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) introduced this policy in order to preserve the night sky by regulating the use of artificial lighting. The goal is to ensure that interior lighting in private spaces does not spill outside, and to focus on outdoor lights in both public and private sectors. Cultural festivals and events are exempt from these guidelines.
Salem Al Kaabi, the director-general of operations affairs at DMT, stated that the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy reflects the emirate’s commitment to protecting the beauty of the night sky. By implementing these regulations, the city aims to enhance residents’ quality of life and contribute to a global movement focused on preserving natural beauty. The policy will be enforced through a methodology to address light pollution, as well as awareness programs to educate the public.
The regulations of the Dark Sky Policy will apply to a wide range of areas including public buildings, streets, parks, beaches, commercial organizations, agricultural and industrial areas, and more. These regulations include using shielded lighting, motion-activated security lighting, and a coordinated shutdown of non-security lighting at midnight. Violators of the policy will be given a grace period to adjust their lighting accordingly.
Aligned with the goals of the International Dark Sky Association, the Dark Sky Policy will take a multifaceted approach to promote sustainable lighting systems, protect the natural environment and wildlife, support scientific research in astronomy, enhance public health, and promote sustainable development. Residents and relevant entities are required to comply with the conditions outlined in the policy, as well as applicable manuals and the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System.
In conclusion, the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy represents a significant step towards reducing light pollution and preserving the beauty of the night sky. By implementing regulations on indoor and outdoor lighting, the city aims to create a harmonious coexistence between the urban environment and celestial wonders. This policy is part of a global movement to protect natural beauty and promote sustainable practices in lighting systems. Residents and organizations in Abu Dhabi are encouraged to abide by the guidelines set forth in this new policy to contribute to the preservation of the night sky.
