The Olympic flame reached Marseille with tight security measures ahead of the Paris 2024 Games Opening Ceremony. More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony after a six-hour parade of the Belem, which left Greece on April 27 with the flame. The ship was awaited by 1,024 boats as around 6,000 law enforcement officers secure the area. Florent Manaudou, France’s 2012 Olympic men’s 50-metre freestyle swimming champion, will bring the flame to land in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron.

The event is considered a ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, with Marseille being chosen as the ideal spot to create memories. The unique location was founded around 600 BC by Greek settlers, making it a fitting place for the flame’s arrival. Following the ceremony, a free rap concert on a floating stage will entertain 45,000 spectators. Residents and boat owners in Marseille view this event as an honor and an exceptional promotion for the city, hoping it will benefit the economy and enhance the city’s image.

The tranquility of the Mediterranean sea in the background of the Old Port during the event adds to the ideal atmosphere in France’s oldest city. The torch relay will begin with former Olympique de Marseille soccer players as well as a three-star chef among the torch bearers. Over 10,000 people will participate in the relay before the flame reaches Paris and is displayed near the Louvre, in the Jardin des Tuileries. The Olympic Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place on the River Seine on July 26.

The level of security in Marseille is unprecedented, with police canine units and elite forces deployed to ensure the safety of the area. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin emphasized the importance of maintaining security while allowing life to continue in Marseille. Paris 2024 executive director Thierry Reboul, responsible for the ceremonies, sees the event as a significant part of the Olympics and Paralympics, with Marseille chosen as the ideal location to create lasting memories. The president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, believes Marseille was the obvious choice for this historic event.

As the city gears up for the arrival of the Olympic flame, excitement and anticipation are palpable among residents and visitors alike. The significance of the event, along with the exceptional security measures in place, highlight the importance of the Paris 2024 Games and the symbolism of the Olympic flame. With thousands expected to attend the ceremony and participate in the torch relay, Marseille is poised to showcase its culture and heritage on a global stage. The free rap concert and other festivities planned for the event promise to leave a lasting impact on the city and its residents while also leaving a positive impression on viewers worldwide.
