The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar recently announced the opening of their much-awaited BFA + MFA Exhibition 2024, which is now open to the public. The exhibition showcases the unique works of senior students from various programs, including graphic design, interior design, painting and printmaking, and fashion design. The exhibition explores themes such as culture, language, identity, mental health, physical well-being, and the environment. Visitors can view the exhibition between May 6 to 12, from 9am to 5 pm, at the VCUarts Qatar campus in Education City.
The opening night of the exhibition was attended by key stakeholders from Qatar’s creative sector, as well as family and friends of the graduating students. The Class of 2024 has delved into a wide range of themes, including cultural identity, displacement, colonization, and the psychological effects of being a third-culture kid. Additionally, several projects focused on health-related issues such as obesity, maternal health, autism, ADHD, and digital overuse, showcasing the role of design in promoting well-being.
Students utilized a variety of media and tools to create their final projects, incorporating techniques such as light, sound, video, animation, textile design, fabrication technology, and more. The diversity of themes explored by the students reflects their unique journeys and experiences, with a focus on traditions and influences of life in Qatar. The day of the exhibition launch also saw prospective students visit the campus for ‘Hayakom’, a traditional welcome for students offered places at VCUarts Qatar for the Fall semester.
The Class of 2024 follows in the footsteps of alumni who have achieved recognition through international awards and prestigious exhibitions worldwide. VCUarts Qatar offers students the opportunity to earn Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in various fields, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Design degree. The exhibition presents a platform for students to showcase their creativity, innovation, and unique perspectives, highlighting the impact of art and design in addressing contemporary issues and promoting well-being.
