The UAE has provided former PE teacher Amy Gillingham with the job of her dreams as the country’s first female football commentator. In just over two years, she has become a regular reporter for Abu Dhabi TV and a commentator for various leagues. Originating from Merseyside, England, Gillingham’s new career has allowed her to interview some of the world’s most famous players, and she is ecstatic about the opportunities she has received, such as covering the Dubai Super Cup in 2022.
Before moving to the UAE, Gillingham played semi-professional football for Liverpool Feds and FC United of Manchester. As a dedicated Liverpool fan, meeting Jürgen Klopp and other players has been a dream come true for her. The UAE’s growing prominence in world football has allowed Gillingham to witness the country’s status as a hub for top clubs during mid and preseason preparations. She feels grateful and fortunate for the experiences she has had in the industry.
Despite having no prior presenting experience, Gillingham gained her role by chance and has learned from experienced commentators in the industry. She emphasizes the importance of preparation for each match, including research on the players and creating notes. The unpredictability of live commentary requires her to react quickly and add emotion to the game. Gillingham also highlights the support and welcome she has received in the football industry in the UAE.
While Gillingham remains the only female football commentator in the UAE, she has noticed increased participation of women in sports presenting roles. She feels supported and welcomed in the industry and hopes to inspire more women and girls to pursue careers in sports presenting. The progress of women’s football in Saudi Arabia and the UAE is promising, with live broadcasts of women’s matches on television. Gillingham sees potential for further development in women’s football.
In addition to her role as a sports commentator, Gillingham works as a sports coordinator for the Emirates School Establishment, organizing football competitions and sporting events in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. She aims to inspire young aspiring female footballers in the UAE and hopes to see more women entering the industry. Gillingham encourages everyone to follow their dreams and pursue their passions, showcasing the opportunities available in the sports presenting field.
