Despite the inclement weather in the UAE, with heavy rain and fog affecting the roads, some employees still had to physically report to work. According to a poll conducted by Khaleej Times, more than 10,000 people participated, with over 4,500 votes indicating that they had to commute to their workplaces. On the other hand, a majority of respondents (5,600) said they were able to work remotely. This highlights the challenges faced by employees and the different approaches taken by employers during adverse weather conditions.

The remote work system was activated for most government employees on May 2, following guidelines from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). Private sector companies were also advised to implement flexible and remote work patterns to ensure the safety and well-being of their employees. Despite these recommendations, some private sector employees still had to travel to their workplaces, facing tough decisions and challenging conditions on the road.

Individual stories from UAE residents shed light on the difficulties and precautions taken during the inclement weather. Zainab A, a resident of Al Ain, found herself in a dilemma when her employer insisted on physical presence at the office. After waiting for the haze to subside, Zainab decided to brave the journey, prioritizing safety while remaining productive by joining a meeting call in her car during the rain wait. Similarly, S. Salim from Ras Al Khaimah had to go into the office for a presentation, but found that the road was clear with minimal water accumulation, thanks to water tankers deployed since 9am to clear excess water.

Despite the challenges, some employees like Cinta Budiarsya from Sharjah working in Dubai decided to physically go to work due to the nature of their job. Taking precautions and observing the weather forecast, Cinta made the decision to return home to her family after ensuring the roads were clear and safe. In contrast, Daran Bryson, a Dubai resident working as a barista, started his journey three hours earlier to avoid any delays or risks to his job. Despite facing a large water puddle in front of his building, Daran took all necessary precautions, carrying his belongings in a bag, and contacting his boss for help when waiting for the bus proved challenging.

The UAE prepared for the wave of unstable weather by deploying resources to clear excess water and ensure safety on the roads. Despite the physical challenges faced by employees during the inclement weather, many were able to adapt and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and productivity. Employers also played a role in supporting their employees, with some offering accommodations or transportation assistance to ensure their well-being during the challenging weather conditions. Overall, the stories of resilience and adaptability showcased by UAE residents during this period of inclement weather reflect the community’s ability to overcome challenges together.
