Amid heavy rainfall and flooding in Sharjah on May 2, many commuters found themselves stranded, unable to cross waterlogged roads and underpasses. Jamaluddin, a Bangladeshi expat, witnessed the challenges faced by pedestrians trying to navigate the submerged underpass on Al Wahda Street. Inspired to help, Jamaluddin used his bicycle to ferry individuals across the underpass, ensuring they could cross without getting wet. Similarly, other residents like Indian expat Aslam Sheikh also stepped in to assist those in need, offering to help a family push their shopping cart through the flooded streets.
The sense of community and support was evident as many residents came forward to aid those struggling during the rain. One such resident, Jlory, dedicated herself to helping the stray cats in the neighborhood by building a makeshift shelter for them in a private parking area. Despite the challenging weather conditions, Jlory continues to provide shelter, food, and water to the cats, ensuring their well-being. As the rain continued to pour, volunteers and social organizations across the country mobilized to prepare aid missions, packing food supplies and making necessary arrangements to assist those in need.
Hameed Yasin, the general secretary of the Iman Cultural Center, mentioned the preparedness of their organization, having packed over 500 food kits to distribute to people in case of an emergency. Shahid, an active volunteer since the previous rainfall, was also ready to assist individuals stranded in Sharjah if the situation worsened. He mentioned the mobilization of SUVs and the readiness of the team to evacuate individuals in case of emergencies. The collaborative efforts of volunteers and organizations showcase the community’s resilience and readiness to support each other during challenging times.
