The Czech Republic recently celebrated 20 years of being a member of the European Union, with a star-studded ceremony at Prague Castle. Prime Minister Petr Fiala expressed his support for the enlargement of the EU to include countries like the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova. He emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the accession process, stating that if these countries meet the necessary criteria, they should be accepted into the EU. President Petr Pavel highlighted the significance of EU and NATO membership for the freedom, prosperity, and security of Czechia.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also attended the event and stressed the importance of European states coming together to address threats against the bloc. He referred to Ukraine as an “integral part” of Europe and expressed support for its future membership in the EU. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an impassioned video speech, expressing his hope that Ukraine will soon become a part of the European family. Ukraine applied for EU membership in 2022 and was granted candidate status, with accession negotiations currently underway between EU leaders and Kiev.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also made an appearance at the ceremony in Prague. She visited the Czechoslovak Group company facility, which specializes in the production of defense, aerospace, ammunition, automotive, and railway industry products. Von der Leyen commended Czechia’s military industries for their crucial role in supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s invasion. She highlighted the importance of providing Ukraine with the necessary military capabilities to resist Russia’s aggression.

The event in Prague underscored the solidarity and support of European Union member states for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the bloc. The EU figures in attendance reiterated their commitment to unity and collective action in responding to threats against the European continent. They emphasized the shared values of mutual respect, freedom, and security that underpin the EU and NATO memberships of member states like Czechia. The willingness of EU leaders to engage in accession negotiations with Ukraine demonstrates the bloc’s commitment to expanding and strengthening its ties with countries that share its values and aspirations.

The statements made by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and President Ursula von der Leyen reflect a unified European front in supporting Ukraine’s European integration and membership aspirations. The EU leaders’ remarks also emphasize the importance of upholding democratic values, respecting the rule of law, and promoting stability and security across the European continent. As Ukraine continues its journey towards EU membership, the support and solidarity of European Union member states will be instrumental in shaping its future as an integral part of the European family.
