Oman’s aviation sector is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, solidifying its position as a key player in the global air travel network. The Sultanate of Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has reported remarkable achievements in 2025 and 2026, demonstrating significant increases in air traffic, operational efficiency, and crucial infrastructure development. This growth underscores Oman’s strategic importance as a vital link between Asia, Europe, and Africa, attracting increased investment and boosting tourism.

Significant Growth in Oman’s Air Traffic

The year 2025 was a landmark year for Omani aviation. A staggering 585,000 aircraft traversed Omani airspace, a clear indication of the country’s growing prominence as a major air corridor. This substantial volume is directly attributable to Oman’s advantageous geographical location, facilitating dense and efficient international flight paths. The CAA’s effective management of this airspace is crucial for maintaining smooth and safe operations for airlines worldwide.

Operational Performance and Regulatory Oversight

Beyond simply managing airspace, the CAA demonstrated a robust operational capacity. Over 18,000 permits were issued for both scheduled airline operations and diplomatic flights, reflecting a surge in demand for air transport services. This increase necessitates a strong regulatory framework, and the CAA responded by granting 3,627 aviation obstacle permits. These permits are vital for ensuring safe navigation and maintaining effective oversight of the aviation environment.

Furthermore, the CAA prioritized passenger satisfaction. A dedicated system efficiently handled 524 passenger complaints in 2025, demonstrating a commitment to protecting passenger rights and continually improving service quality across the entire aviation sector. This proactive approach to customer service builds trust and enhances Oman’s reputation as a passenger-friendly destination.

Record Financial Performance and Workforce Development

The CAA’s success wasn’t limited to operational metrics. 2025 also saw a record-breaking financial performance, with revenues reaching OMR 107 million – the highest in the Authority’s history. This achievement is a testament to sustainable sector growth, strong governance practices, and enhanced financial efficiency within the organization. This financial stability allows for continued investment in infrastructure and personnel.

Recognizing the importance of a skilled national workforce, the CAA actively invested in Omani talent. 101 Omani citizens were hired, and 139 university students were provided with valuable on-the-job training opportunities. This commitment to workforce development strengthens professional capabilities within the civil aviation sector and supports Oman’s long-term economic goals.

Infrastructure Development and Future Expansion

Building on the successes of 2025, 2026 marked a new phase of development for Oman’s aviation industry. A significant milestone was the opening of the Aircraft Maintenance Building at Muscat International Airport. This new facility enhances technical and maintenance services available to airlines operating in and through Oman, further solidifying its position as a regional aviation hub.

Sohar Airport Expansion

Looking ahead, the CAA launched the construction tender for a new terminal building at Sohar Airport. This strategic project aims to significantly expand passenger capacity and elevate service standards in northern Oman. The expansion of Sohar Airport will cater to the growing demand for air travel in the region and contribute to increased tourism in Oman.

A Vision for the Future of Omani Aviation

Officials have consistently emphasized that these accomplishments reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to developing a modern, safe, and competitive aviation sector. This sector is seen as a key driver of economic diversification, tourism growth, and enhanced international connectivity. The CAA reaffirmed its dedication to upgrading infrastructure, improving regulatory performance, and strengthening Oman’s position as a leading regional aviation hub.

The continued growth in air traffic through Oman, coupled with strategic investments in infrastructure and workforce development, positions the Sultanate for continued success in the years to come. The CAA’s proactive approach to regulation, passenger rights, and financial sustainability ensures a stable and thriving aviation ecosystem.
