The 7th International Universities Debating Championship, organized by the QatarDebate Center, is set to begin today in Doha, Qatar. This five-day event will bring together approximately 600 participants from over 100 universities worldwide to engage in debates in Arabic. The competition will be judged by individuals from diverse backgrounds representing 50 countries. The tournament is being held in collaboration with the Doha Forum, Al Jazeera Media Institute, the Translation and Interpreting Institute at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and the Doha International Family Institute.

Reem Al Musallam, the Communications Manager at QatarDebate Center, emphasized the significance of the Championship, noting the substantial international participation with 100 teams from 50 different countries. Participants are divided into two categories based on proficiency in the Arabic language, catering to both native and non-native speakers. Al Musallam believes that the event showcases the center’s success in promoting cultural, scientific, and linguistic exchange through debates, providing participants with a platform to discuss a wide range of intellectual topics and expand their knowledge.

The championship aims to cultivate the art of debate among youth, enhance their public speaking skills in Arabic, and foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. It also serves to encourage linguistic and cultural integration, boost the confidence of non-native Arabic speakers, and improve their fluency in the language. Prior to the commencement of the tournament, over 80 judges from Qatar and 45 from other countries, as well as debate coaches, underwent preparatory training organized by the center to enhance their adjudication skills and techniques.

The event marks the culmination of national championships held in various countries under the supervision of the QatarDebate Center. Leading up to the international competition, the center organized 15 national championships from October 2023 to February 2024 in countries such as Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, Malaysia, India, and others. These championships involved a total of 925 speakers and 565 judges, highlighting the widespread reach and impact of the center’s initiatives in promoting debate and intellectual discourse.

Through the 7th International Universities Debating Championship, participants have the opportunity to engage in dialogue on a diverse range of topics, exchange ideas, and strengthen their skills in critical thinking and communication. The tournament not only serves as a platform for academic and intellectual growth but also facilitates cultural exchange and collaboration among individuals from different backgrounds. The event underscores the importance of fostering debate and dialogue as vehicles for learning, understanding, and shaping future leaders.

In conclusion, the QatarDebate Center’s commitment to promoting debate, public speaking, and critical thinking through events like the International Universities Debating Championship highlights its dedication to fostering intellectual growth and cultural exchange on a global scale. By bringing together participants from a wide range of countries and backgrounds, the championship serves as a platform for learning, dialogue, and collaboration, ultimately contributing to the development of well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate complex challenges in today’s world.
